RESUMO

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in the new-born baby is a rare though well-acknowledged clinical condition. We present two cases of complete utero-vaginal prolapse in new-born babies. Both infants were otherwise healthy and neurologically normal in their clinical presentation and evaluation. The prolapse was successfully managed with a non-surgical approach. There appears to be two distinct forms of POP in newborns based on the available literature. There are those that occur in newborns with spina bifida (77 % of cases) and those that occur in neurologically intact newborns (23 %). The management of these two types are distinctly different and are discussed in greater detail in this report.

RESUMO

Uterine prolapse is commonly seen in the geriatric age group. Congenital vaginouterine prolapse is a rare condition occurring in neonates and is usually associated with spinal cord malformations in about 85% of cases. Several modalities of treatment have been described for neonatal uterine prolapse. Conservative treatment in the form of simple digital reposition, use of pessary or other self-retaining device is usually sufficient to treat this condition, which is self-limiting and regressive. Here we report our first case of neonatal uterine prolapse, managed successfully with simple digital reposition.

RESUMO

Genital prolapse in the newborn is a rare clinical condition often times seen in association with congenital myelo-meningocele, or this could occur following shigellosis infection. We therefore report two neonates with rectal prolapse following diarrhea and utero-vaginal prolapse associated with congenital spinal bifida.

RESUMO

An adolescent girl with an anovestibular fistula presenting as a complete vaginal prolapse and large-bowel obstruction is reported. The prolapse was reduced manually after repeated bowel washouts and a divided high sigmoid colostomy. The patient is awaiting posterior sagittal anorectoplasty. Possible etiopathologic factors of the prolapse are discussed. A vaginal prolapse in a patient with an anorectal malformation has not been reported previously in the English literature.

RESUMO

The presence of genital prolapse in neonates and young women poses a challenging management problem to the gynecologist. Neonatal uterine prolapse is associated with congenital spinal defects, and successful correction has been achieved mainly with simple digital reduction or the use of a small pessary. Uterine prolapse can also occur in young or nulliparous woman who wish to preserve their fertility. Operations using sling, sacral cervicopexy, or transvaginal sacrospinal fixation techniques seem to provide excellent repair for these patients, including the possibility of childbearing. A review of the pathophysiology of genital prolapse in neonates and young women with emphasis on the surgical and nonsurgical options for management is presented.

RESUMO

Genital prolapse in the female infant during the neonatal period is relatively rare and is usually associated with anomalies of the central nervous system. A case of vaginal prolapse in a small-for-gestational-age preterm female infant, without any associated nervous system anomalies, is presented. The clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, management, and outcome of the case are discussed with reference to a review of the literature.

RESUMO

Neonatal genital prolapse is a rare condition. It usually occurs during the first few days of life and presents as a tumor mass protruding from the vulva. Most cases occur in association with meningomyelocele or other anomalies of the central nervous system. Two cases are presented to illustrate the usefulness of conservative management of this unusual problem. A historical review of the literature is presented to acquaint the reader with the variety of treatments that have been used in the past.

RESUMO

The rare condition of neonatal uterine prolapse is usually associated with congenital spinal defects and is often resistant to simple reduction. Previously, treatment has been primarily surgical and often deforming. In this case report a silastic-ensheathed pessary fashioned from a rubber Penrose drain allowed a nonoperative, simple and permanent correction, permitting the more important, yet less obvious, associated defects to take therapeutic precedence.
